Hospital Radio Plymouth (HRP) has been shortlisted in three categories in this year’s Hospital Broadcasting Awards.

HRP are nominated for Best Station Promotion (for Requestline with Steve Glanville and Jill Bright), Best Male Presenter (Andrew Hill), and Station of the Year, a category in which HRP has been shortlisted every year since 2008, and been awarded bronze, silver or gold 8 times.

This year’s awards ceremony will be held online, with hospital radio stations from across the UK coming together to celebrate the work done by volunteers to provide entertainment and interesting programmes for those in hospital. The winners will be announced on Saturday 20th March.

Hospital Radio Plymouth has also built links with residential homes in the city, regularly collecting requests from residents. This has proven particularly valuable over lockdown when residents have been admitted to hospital but haven’t had visitors – submitting requests and listening to the same shows as other residents has helped to reduce feelings of isolation.

Station Manager Keith Jolley said: “This past year has shown the importance of hospital radio in lifting the spirits of those in hospital and the wider community, and our volunteers have done an incredible job – lots of our presenters have set up home studios so they can keep producing shows, and we’re finding alternative ways of gathering requests too.

“It’s a testament to our volunteers that we are still producing content which is getting shortlisted for awards, in spite of the circumstances.”

The multi-award winning station has a team of volunteers who collect requests, put together programmes and make sure there is a friendly voice at the patient’s bedside 24/7.
