Hospital Radio Plymouth (HRP) has officially moved into new, purpose-built studios within Derriford Hospital, marking a major step forward for the award-winning volunteer-run radio station that has served the local community for over 60 years.

The relocation comes as part of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust’s wider effort to consolidate services, reduce rental costs. The move places the station at the very heart of the hospital it serves—an advantage not lost on the HRP team.

“The location of the new studios is key,” says Keith Jolley, Station Manager and volunteer of over 30 years. “It brings us physically closer to the hospital community. Volunteers can now walk to the wards in just five minutes, making it easier than ever to stay connected with the people we’re here to support.”

The modern studios, designed specifically for radio broadcasting, are equipped with the latest technology and offer a light, airy working environment. The central location also means hospital staff and visitors regularly drop in for interviews and live features.

“It’s a fantastic space,” adds John Gerrans, HRP’s Breakfast Show presenter. “The easy access means we’re constantly welcoming new voices into the studio. And thanks to our big windows, we often get curious passers-by—and the occasional deer—peering in to see what’s going on!”

Founded in 1969, Hospital Radio Plymouth is run entirely by volunteers, who dedicate around 40 hours a week to visiting wards, taking music requests, and chatting with patients. Since 2000, HRP has broadcast on FM via a Low Power FM licence from Ofcom, transmitting across the Derriford site. More recently, the station has joined the PLYMDAB network, allowing it to broadcast across Plymouth on DAB+ digital radio.

Listeners can tune in:

On 107.3 FM within Derriford Hospital

On DAB+ across Plymouth by searching HRP

On smart devices and apps including Radioplayer—just search Hospital Radio Plymouth

Patients and the public can also call the studio with requests or messages on 01752 784300.

“This move is more than just a new home,” Jolley adds. “It’s a fresh start and a chance to grow our connection with patients, staff, and the wider community.”

HRP is a registered charity, supported by local fundraising and powered entirely by volunteer effort.
