Tuned into your requests since 1969 - Forty years of Hospital Radio Plymouth

We have 2 specialist volunteer vacancies for which we are currently recruiting. To apply for a position, or if you would like an informal chat about one of these roles, please return to the main volunteering page and submit the contact form.

WARD VISITORS

If you would like to help people in hospital, you can become part of our successful team helping us to build further on our growing audience levels.

A number of opportunities exist for persons to visit the wards in Derriford Hospital during the afternoon between 2pm and 5pm, to set up the bedside Hospedia / Patientline equipment for patients so they can listen to us and to promote our service by distributing leaflets detailing the programmes we broadcast.

Elderly patients in particular are not sure how to set the equipment up themselves and many do not realise they can receive the radio service for free. You would be helping patients relieve the boredom of the day by helping them to make use of their radios and raising their awareness of our service.

We would envisage a team of volunteers each committing to a set day per week to carry out these activities for one or more hours at a time during the afternoon.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to easily converse with a cross range of age groups is essential.

Practical training will be provided in the setting up of the bedside equipment to receive our service. This is fairly easy to master and essentially involves using the bedside freephone to liaise with the Patientline/Hospedia call centre to activate the service. Candiates will also need to be aware of and comply with the Hospital Hygiene, Protected Meal Times and Infection Control procedures details of which will be provided upon induction.

HEALTH AND SAFETY / PREMISES MANAGER

You could become part of this successful organisation and help maintain safe operational conditions for its volunteers and beneficiaries, as an opportunity exists for the important role of Health and Safety  / Premises Officer.

Duties will include conducting risk assessments and making recommendations to the Trustees on Health and Safety issues and well as liaising with the Estates Department of the Plymouth Hospital NHS Trust on issues of premises upkeep.

The Charity's core operation times are 6pm - 10.30pm weekdays and 8am to 10pm at weekends, with some limited weekday afternoon broadcasting in addition.

Hours are by agreement to suit the successful applicant who will be expected to attend the premises at least one evening per week. Some degree of adminstrative work can be conducted from home.

The role has the scope for the successful applicant to become a Trustee of the Charity and be part of its management team upon successful completion of a six month probationary period.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to easily converse with a cross range of age groups is imperative. A working knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation and an past professional background in this sort of environment would be a distinct advantage. Conversely the role might be suitable for a student or graduate with ambitions to pursue a career in the Health and Safety sector.
